Snow Day 2013

Yesterday was one of those rare flukes where we actually had snow!

They had been warning about potential icy conditions Wednesday night because we've had nothing but rain for the past week and were expecting freezing temps overnight. So when I got up yesterday morning I turned on the news to see if there were any closings due to icy roads.

Us folks in the south don't really know how to drive on snow/ice so any potential for icy driving conditions usually calls for a complete shutdown in most instances. When I first got up, the yard was wet but clear. The news was reporting spots of ice that were supposed to be cleared up by 9 or 10 am so most of the area schools were opening with delays.

The university was business as usual. However, being that I commute 45 minutes on mostly rural highway, Mama and I declared our own delay and had planned to leave around 9am in hopes of missing the ice.

Mother nature, however, had different plans.

While I was on the phone with a co-worker to let her know I'd be in late, she mentioned something about the snow and I was all, "What? Snow!" Opened the drapes and there it was. A blanket of white with a steady downpour of the frosty business.

An hour later I was calling back to say I wouldn't be in at all.

The roads were covered in the stuff and the folks on the news were urging anyone who didn't HAVE to be on the roads to NOT be on the roads. So Mama and I called it a snow day and stayed home.

It didn't really stop snowing until around 11:30 or at which point it almost immediately started melting. By around 5ish, there were only spots of it that were beginning to re-freeze. Still had a few patches of it this morning when I got up. But today's highs being in the 50's...well, it's all gone now.

But it sure was fun and exciting while it lasted.

Meanwhile, I know all you northern folks are all, "Bah. Wimps!"  I dare ya, though, to come down here and say that in July! haha

What did I do with my unexpected day off work? Well, I watched the Haven marathon on Syfy, ate a lot of cheese and crackers, and began disassembling Christmas. Notice I only said "began" as in the tree is still up and fully decorated. I'll tackle that this weekend. I just couldn't see spending the whole day working!

Oh, and I did take an hour and a half nap in the afternoon. Nothing quite so decadent as having an unexpected day off work to laze around on the couch in my pj's all day!

ROFL...I was wondering if you received any of that snow last week. Which mean you've now had more this winter than Chicago (they haven't had any measurable snow yet this year...crazy!). And yeah, not only do southerners not know how to drive in snow and ice, it's not like you have fleets of plows and salt trucks as we do up here.

How come you weren't out there with Libby playing in it? What did Lyssa and Ethan think of it? We just got another inch last night, and could see another inch or two tonight. A "winter mix" is predicted for Sunday, followed by rain later next week. At least the rain means and end to these Arctic temperatures plaguing us this week!

I was out there with her but I didn't play in it much. I think I threw one snowball. I'd rather look at it than get in it. haha

The kids LOVED it from what I hear. Sis2 said it was already snowing at their house when they got up so they suited up in their snow gear on top of their pj's and played in it most of the morning. ;-)

And I suppose she did not think to get pictures?

I have a snow day today and what did I do? I layered up and took my camera on a 3-mile walk. Really want a nap now, lol.

No, I'm sure she got a ton of pictures but since Goofus is the one who is responsible for sharing we hardly ever get any. I think I have three that he emailed. I'll have to unearth them and share on here. :)
